Primary Sevens Scale New Heights.

16th Mar 2017

The Primary Seven pupils have successfully completed their sixth Adventure Club Day. Since October they have spent three sessions in the Mournes climbing Carn followed by Ott Mountains. Then in November they tackled Pigeon Rock Mountain, descending in the dark with the aid of head torches. In December they focused on developing their map reading and general navigation skills in Tollymore. During each of the sessions they were developing their knowledge and practice of "Leave no Trace" a programme that encourages appropriate interaction with the natural wildlife environment to enhance enjoyment and at the same time encourage respect and minimal  harm to that habitat. The winter months of January and February were spent developing rope skills during break and dinner times in school(ably led by Caoimhe Roe) and  their climbing skills on the excellent facilities at the Tollymore National Outdoor Centre. So in March they were ready to put their newly acquired skills to the test in climbing the cliff face on  Altnadue Quarry  and abseiling  back down again. Over the next three months the children in the Adventure Club will be focused on developing a variety  of skills  necessary to safely enjoy our local  lakes and waterways.
