Lego League Tournament Day 2023

9th Jun 2023

Following a highly successful eight-week programme, Primary 7 made their way to the school hall on Friday for our Lego League Tournament Day. This was an opportunity for the pupils to showcase their wonderful teamwork, engineering and coding skills that they have learnt during the past term.

Their first task was presenting to a panel of judges, explaining how they demonstrated the core values of: Teamwork, Discovery, Innovation, Impact, Inclusivity and Fun. Each child spoke with great maturity and enthusiasm and the judging panel were certainly impressed.

Afterwards, three children from each team came forward to program their robot. Their challenge was to complete as many tasks as they could in two minutes and thirty seconds. Over the past term, each team had been working on building their own algorithms with each approaching the missions in a different manner. The coding skills on display during this time were superb!

After some deliberation, our judges had to make the unenviable decision of selecting one team as the overall Lego League Champions. After much anticipation, ‘The Renewable Rats’ were crowned champions.

The nature of the project means that all thirty children have benefitted by learning so many vital cross-curricular links in such a short period of time. The skills developed and the lessons learnt will be invaluable for the children as they progress to secondary school and into adult life.

A special thanks must go to Marie McMullan from Sentinus for her wonderful experience and assistance over the past eight weeks. Another word of thanks must also go to one of our parents, Mr. Michael Neeson of Kainos, Digital Technology Solutions who visited school this morning to help judge the contest. Lastly, a huge thank you to the pupils of Primary 7 who made this year's Lego League experience so enjoyable for everyone involved. Well done Primary 7!
