P7 Paper Tower Technology Challenge
After studying how to make paper stronger through bending and folding and researching the Romans use of arches, columns and triangles to strengthen structures. The primary sevens embarked on a quest to build the tallest tower that could support a large rubber. The only materials available to them were sheets of A4 paper, newspaper and tape. Planning and design was crucial but so was the ability to be able to assess and modify their designs to take account of any problems. The competition was fierce and there was a wide variety of approaches adopted. With thirty minutes to go every group had made great progress and it was hard to see who was going to come out on top. The winners by a very small margin were Megan, Scarlet, Blake and Karim. Blake and Karim then built the highest towers out of paper only and therefore went on to represent Carnacaville in The St Louis Grammar School Technology Challenge. The boys did superbly picking up third place out of thirteen schools. On the evidence of this little project you would have to say there could be a few good Carnacaville engineers out there some day in the future.
