Three in a Row for Carnacaville Tennis Team
The annual NASUWT Primary Schools’ Tennis Tournament was played out on Friday 10th June at Newcastle tennis courts. Despite the earlier forecast for rain, the weather played ball, and all matches ran smoothly without so much as a drop interrupting play. Teams consisting of four players from five local Primary Schools faced each other across the net. The Carnacaville team of Katie Lowry, Aodhan Gorman, Ciaran Flanigan and Conor Walsh fought some great duels throughout the afternoon with every match being played in great spirit.
The final saw a repeat of the, by now familiar showdown between St Joseph’s, Carnacaville and All Children’s IPS.
Both teams had all to play for, with St Joseph’s going for the hat trick, Supporters of both sets of finalists as well as the neutrals who had turned out for the event were treated to some high quality tennis with a series of closely contested rallies making it a very exciting encounter. The experienced St Joseph’s team saved their best tennis for the final (having narrowly defeated Sacred Heart, Dundrum in the semi-final) and stepped up a gear to claim a convincing win over their highly competitive opponents.
Victory ensured that St Joseph’s, Carnacaville will have its name etched on the shield for the third year running.
Congratulations to St Joseph’s and well done to all the participants who did themselves and their schools proud! Thanks to Hazel Carder for organising the tournament so efficiently again this year and to Louise O’Prey, NASUWT Representative who presented medals to all participants and the coveted shield to the jubilant St Joseph’s team.
